Appliance Repair FAQ — South Sound

Common questions about our service.

Is the water in Olympia, Lacey, and Tumwater hard or soft?

In town, it's soft to only slightly hard. Olympia draws about 85 percent of its supply from the McAllister Wellfield, testing 55–60 mg/L — roughly 3–4 grains per gallon. Lacey and Tumwater run comparable municipal well water. That means heavy limescale is rarely the cause of appliance trouble inside the cities, which is exactly why a repair company needs to look for the real local culprits — humidity-driven wear and, on rural properties, well-water iron — instead of blaming scale by default.

Why does my well water stain laundry and clog my ice maker?

Iron and manganese. Across the rural South Sound — Yelm, Rainier, Tenino, and the edges of Tumwater and Lacey — many homes are on private wells drawing groundwater naturally high in these minerals. Iron oxidizes into rust that stains laundry and fixtures, leaves orange film in dishwashers, and builds mineral sludge that blocks refrigerator ice-maker fill valves. On every rural call we test for well-water minerals first, because swapping the part without addressing the water just means it fails again.

Do you offer same-day appliance repair across the South Sound?

Yes — six days a week across Olympia, Lacey, Tumwater, Yelm, Tenino, and Rainier. Refrigerator calls get same-day priority whenever possible.

What does the service call fee cover?

The fee covers travel, arrival, and a full appliance diagnostic inspection. It is applied toward your repair cost if you proceed. If you decide not to proceed, you owe only the service call fee.

Why do my refrigerator and washer door seals get moldy here?

That's the marine-climate pattern. Unlike dry inland regions where rubber door seals dry out and crack, the South Sound's year-round humidity encourages mildew growth on gaskets instead. It's a wet-climate problem, and the fix is proper gasket cleaning or replacement plus airflow guidance — not the dry-climate remedies national chains sometimes apply by habit. We assess seals for humidity-driven wear on every relevant call.

My dryer takes two cycles to dry a load. Why?

In our damp climate the usual causes are a moisture-laden or partly blocked vent run and lint buildup that holds humidity. Long, sagging, or uninsulated vent paths through unconditioned garages stay damp and choke airflow. We check vent integrity and moisture as a standard part of every South Sound dryer service, then clear or reroute as needed.

Should I repair or replace my appliance?

If the repair cost is under 50 percent of a comparable new appliance's price and the unit is under 8–10 years old, repair usually makes more financial sense. On well-water properties we also factor in whether untreated iron will keep attacking a new machine — sometimes the smarter money is fixing the current unit and addressing the water. We give direct guidance on every call.
